However, it's far more difficult than the American one. As a person trying to speak in a pure British accent for years, I'm still incapable of doing this perfectly. | |

| If I were in Great Britain, I would try to speak in British accent. If I were in the USA, I would try to speak in American accent. Yet, I have never been in an English speaking country, nor have I any intent to do so in the near future. That's why I have never tried to speak as an English, neither as an American. However, I do pay attention to speak Turkish in Istanbul accent ![]() |

| As the lecturers and professors we worked together have been mainly from the universities in the States, my accent sounds like a typical American English. Although I like the strong pronunciation of British English, my choice is the other side of this clash. Besides these two, we have three more commonly adopted English accents; Scottish, Irish and Canadian. British and American English share some similar phonetic transcriptions and generalized phonological components however the ones I mentioned are totally different at some cases. Have you ever heard of this, I don't know but : The most appropriate and widely accepted English accent is spoken in Canada. Not in either England or the USA. I know, it's quite surprising however this is what sociolinguists point out. Another important issue in this discussion is that we have at present numereous accents of English. Linguists (as I'm one of them) accept that English is a universal language-candidate. So, where it is spoken, that accent takes the domestic title of the location. Even they accept "Turkish accent of English"... ![]() I prefer American because I'm more accustomed and adjusted to the way they use the pronunciation and intonation items. |

| İ want to make a correction if you don't mind. I think the knowledge about accent is wrong in this topic. The title had to be "American english or British english". Because there are nearly 180 countries and 180 or more accents in the world. Accent is about the throat of the speaker. Namely you can speak english with austrian accent or for example indian accent. But there are two kinds of english and they are british english and American english which shows difference in vocabulary, pronunciation and grammer. Here are some examples for the subject: while waiting for the bus an English says I am in the queue And an American says I am in the line This is the difference in vocabulary. The pronunciation of the word schedule in American english is skedgul In British english it is shedju:l In grammer An American says I am gonna go. While an English says I am going to go. While speaking with an english speaking person, no matter he is an English or American, i prefer to use American english, it is more easy to communicate in my opinion. But if i need to write a document, form etc. i prefer to use British english, cause i feel more formal. I beg your forgiveness and understanding for having the temerity to correct the mistake. |

| actaully, I wouldn't choose an accent, cuz I'd probably talk in a way that I can.I mean people usually don't rack their brains over their type of accent unless they have the knowledge of other accents, too and have an intent to use a specific one.however I don't suppose that we have the chance of hearing and learning various kind of accents in Turkey.our teachers speak "tinglish" (english language with utter turkish sounds )and as students, we're just exposed to their english. another point I want to say is that what's important is to be able to communicate in that language; as long as you're understood, you don't have to strain at using a peculiar accent __________________
